About Rheem HVAC Systems
Owned by Paloma Industries
Rheem was founded in California in 1925 and became best known for water heaters, but the HVAC operation is equally large. The company makes central air conditioners, heat pumps, and furnaces under both the Rheem and Ruud names, and has been a Paloma subsidiary since 1988. HVAC manufacturing happens in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
One thing worth noting: the serial number format is exactly the same whether you're looking at a Rheem water heater or a Rheem heat pump. Positions 2 and 3 are the two-digit manufacturing week; positions 4 and 5 are the two-digit year.

Known Rheem Issues to Watch For
A short list of patterns reported on Rheem equipment. Most have been addressed with revised designs or service bulletins, but they're useful context if you're diagnosing an older system.
- •Some 2010-2015 RA16/17 condensers had a known TXV (thermal expansion valve) issue causing low subcooling; replaceable under warranty.
- •EcoNet-equipped Prestige units occasionally lose Wi-Fi connection when paired with newer Wi-Fi 6E routers; firmware update 4.x.x in 2022 addressed most cases.
- •The plastic drain pan on certain 2014-2017 air handlers could crack if installed without proper level; Rheem revised the pan design in 2018.
