About Lennox HVAC Systems
Owned by Lennox International
Lennox was started in 1895 by Dave Lennox, who built the first riveted steel furnace in America, a genuine engineering step forward at a time when cast iron dominated the market. The company is still headquartered in Texas and manufactures a significant portion of its equipment domestically.
The residential line covers furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, air handlers, and indoor air quality equipment. Lennox sells through dealers rather than home improvement stores, which usually means better installation quality. Serial numbers encode the manufacture date as week and year in the first four digits. A unit built in week 52 of 1996 starts with 5296.
Common Lennox HVAC Models & Series
The most-installed Lennox residential systems on the market today, organized by tier. Knowing your series helps narrow down service parts and warranty terms.
| Series | Type | Tier | Efficiency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Signature SL28XCV | Air Conditioner | Premium | Up to 28 SEER2 | Highest published SEER2 rating in residential equipment; variable-capacity inverter compressor. |
| Signature XP25 | Heat Pump | Premium | Up to 23.5 SEER2 / 10.2 HSPF2 | Variable-capacity inverter; pairs with iComfort S30. |
| Elite EL18XCV | Air Conditioner | Mid-range | Up to 18 SEER2 | Variable-capacity inverter at a lower price than Signature. |
| Merit ML14XC1 | Air Conditioner | Entry | Up to 14.5 SEER2 | Single-stage; meets federal minimum, common builder spec. |
| Signature SLP99V | Gas Furnace | Premium | Up to 99 AFUE | Modulating gas valve, variable-speed blower; the most efficient residential furnace sold in the US. |
| Elite EL296V | Gas Furnace | Mid-range | Up to 96 AFUE | Two-stage gas valve, constant-torque blower. |
How to Read a Lennox Model Number
Example
XC21-036-230
- XCFamily (XC = AC, XP = heat pump, SL = Signature Lineset)
- 21SEER tier (21 ≈ 21 SEER baseline)
- 036Capacity in MBH (036 = 36,000 BTU = 3 tons)
- 230Voltage code (230V single phase)
Lennox uses XC/XP for outdoor units, SL/EL/ML to denote tier (Signature/Elite/Merit), and the number after as a SEER indicator.

Known Lennox Issues to Watch For
A short list of patterns reported on Lennox equipment. Most have been addressed with revised designs or service bulletins, but they're useful context if you're diagnosing an older system.
- •The iComfort S30 communicating thermostat occasionally drops Wi-Fi when paired with mesh router systems; Lennox issued a firmware fix in 2020.
- •Some XC21 and SL18XC1 units installed before 2018 had service-valve leaks at the brazed joint; covered by Lennox bulletin LBL-2018-04.
- •Aluminum coils on entry-tier Merit equipment have above-average corrosion failure when installed within 5 miles of saltwater unless ordered with the optional E-coat.
