R-22: The Repair-Only Generation
If your system was built before 2010, it almost certainly runs R-22. New R-22 equipment was banned from manufacture in 2010, and production and import of the refrigerant itself ended in January 2020. Everything sold since then comes from reclaimed or stockpiled supply, which is why the price per pound keeps climbing.
Here is the part that matters: you can legally run and service an R-22 system as long as you like. The problem is the math. R-410A: Still Fine, Still Serviceable, Do Not Panic
Systems built from 2010 through 2024 run R-410A, and there is a lot of confusion about what the 2025 rules actually did. To be clear: nothing about the transition requires you to replace a working R-410A system.
What ended on January 1, 2025 was the manufacture and import of new residential split systems charged with R-410A. The refrigerant itself remains legal to produce and sell for servicing existing equipment, and there is no end date for that. Your 2016-built heat pump can be recharged today, next year, and ten years from now.
What will change is price. R-410A falls under a federal phasedown that shrinks total production year by year through 2036, so expect servicing costs to drift upward the way R-22 did, just more gradually. If your R-410A system is young, this is a non-issue; it will likely reach the end of its natural lifespan before scarcity bites. If it is already 12 to 15 years old, factor rising refrigerant costs into any major repair decision.
One wrinkle worth knowing: some contractors still have new-old-stock R-410A equipment, and installing it remains permitted in most cases. In 2026 that can be a legitimate budget option for a landlord or a short-horizon homeowner, but the discount needs to be real, because you are buying into a refrigerant with a rising price curve.
R-454B: The New Standard, and the Sticker Shock
Everything manufactured since January 2025 uses a low-global-warming refrigerant, and for most major brands that is R-454B. Carrier calls it Puron Advance; you may also see the chemical name Opteon XL41. Trane, American Standard, and several others chose it as well, while some brands, notably in the ductless world, went with R-32.
The transition has been rocky, and if you are getting quotes right now you are living through the aftermath:
- Equipment costs jumped roughly 15 to 30 percent. Coils, controls, and cabinets were redesigned, and every new system carries refrigerant leak sensors. A 3-ton system that quoted at $4,000 to $5,500 in R-410A form commonly quotes at $5,000 to $7,000 in R-454B form.
- The refrigerant ran short in the summer of 2025. A surge of new installs, cylinder supply problems, and a single dominant chemical producer collided, and some contractors could not get R-454B at any price for weeks. Supply has improved since, but per-pound prices in 2026 remain well above where R-410A sat at the same point in its life.
- Not every technician is certified on it yet. A2L refrigerants require updated handling training and equipment, which has stretched an already thin labor market.
About the "mildly flammable" label
R-454B is classified A2L: the A means non-toxic, the 2L means mildly flammable with a low burning velocity. In plain terms, it is difficult to ignite and burns slowly if it ever does. New systems are built to updated safety codes and include sensors that detect a leak, shut down the compressor, and run the blower to disperse refrigerant before it can concentrate. - Do not pay R-454B prices for R-410A leftovers. New-old-stock equipment should come with a meaningful discount and a clear explanation of the phasedown price outlook.
