About Friedrich HVAC Systems

Owned by Monomoy Capital Partners

Friedrich Air Conditioning has been building cooling equipment in San Antonio, Texas since 1883, when Ed Friedrich founded the company as a furniture and refrigeration business. It moved into room air conditioning in the early 1950s and has stayed focused on that niche ever since: window units, through-the-wall units, PTACs for hotels, and ductless mini-splits rather than central split systems.

The brand is best known for the Kuhl line of commercial-grade window and wall units, which are heavier, quieter, and considerably more expensive than typical consumer window ACs. Friedrich also supplies a large share of the hospitality market with its PTAC chassis, including the FreshAire line that adds ventilation. Private equity firm Monomoy Capital Partners acquired the company in 2021, and most production moved to Monterrey, Mexico in 2008.

Friedrich HVAC Quick Facts

Warranty

Most Friedrich room air conditioners carry a 1-year parts and labor warranty plus a 5-year warranty on the sealed refrigeration system. Kuhl and PTAC commercial units follow the same 1-year and 5-year structure.

Expected Lifespan

AC / Heat pumps: 10 to 15 years for window and wall units, and closer to 7 to 10 years for PTACs in heavy hotel duty

Where It's Built

Historically San Antonio, Texas. Since 2008 most window, wall, and PTAC production has been in Monterrey, Mexico, with portable and mini-split lines built by OEM partners in Asia.

Price Positioning

Premium for room air conditioning. Kuhl window units often cost two to three times as much as a big-box window AC of the same size.

Known Friedrich Issues to Watch For

A short list of patterns reported on Friedrich equipment. Most have been addressed with revised designs or service bulletins, but they're useful context if you're diagnosing an older system.

  • Kuhl and other Friedrich window units are commercial grade and much heavier than typical consumer window ACs; larger chassis are a two-person installation.
  • PTAC units in hotel service run hard duty cycles, so used or surplus hospitality units are often closer to the end of their life than their age suggests.
  • Portable and mini-split lines are built by overseas OEM partners, so some serials on those units may not follow Friedrich's documented date formats.

Friedrich HVAC FAQs

On Friedrich window and through-the-wall units the rating plate is on the side of the cabinet or behind the front grille, visible when the filter panel is opened. On PTACs the plate is on the chassis behind the removable front cover. On mini-splits check the side of the outdoor unit.
