About Gree HVAC Systems

Gree Electric Appliances, founded in 1991 and headquartered in Zhuhai, China, is the world's largest residential air conditioner manufacturer. In North America, Gree is best known for ductless mini-split systems and for the ETAC and ETAC II packaged terminal air conditioners (PTACs), the through-the-wall units found in hotels, motels, and apartments. Gree also builds equipment sold under other brand names, including the Amana PTAC line.

The serial number reads the week of manufacture from the first two digits and the year from the next two digits. For example, 4115GP00044 was built in week 41 of 2015, which falls in mid October. Newer Gree data plates also print the manufacture date directly in year and month format, so check the plate itself first.

Known Gree Issues to Watch For

A short list of patterns reported on Gree equipment. Most have been addressed with revised designs or service bulletins, but they're useful context if you're diagnosing an older system.

  • PTAC units need regular filter and base pan cleaning; clogged drains and dirty coils are the most common service calls in hotel and apartment installs.
  • On mini-splits, inverter control boards and indoor-outdoor communication faults are the most frequent repairs, so use a servicer familiar with Gree equipment.
  • Many Gree-built units carry other brand names on the label, so confirm the actual brand on the data plate before looking up the serial number.

Gree HVAC FAQs

On ETAC and other PTAC units, the rating plate is usually on the right side of the chassis or behind the front grille; slide the chassis out or remove the front panel to see it. On mini-splits, check the side of the outdoor unit and the underside or right side of the indoor head.
