About Airtemp HVAC Systems
Owned by Nortek Global HVAC
Airtemp has a genuinely strange history. It started as a Chrysler brand in the 1950s. Chrysler made automotive and residential air conditioning under the Airtemp name. Chrysler sold the brand, it passed through several owners over the decades, and eventually Nordyne (now Nortek Global HVAC) revived it in 2012 as a private-label budget brand.
Modern Airtemp equipment is built in the same Nortek factories as Frigidaire and Gibson HVAC. Modern Airtemp units (2012 and later) use the Nordyne standard: a three-character prefix, then a two-digit year in positions 4 and 5 and a two-digit month in positions 6 and 7. Older Airtemp units from the 1970s and 1980s used different date codes, which this tool also reads.

Known Airtemp Issues to Watch For
A short list of patterns reported on Airtemp equipment. Most have been addressed with revised designs or service bulletins, but they're useful context if you're diagnosing an older system.
- •Airtemp uses a smaller dealer network than other Nortek brands, which can make parts and warranty service harder to obtain in some markets.
- •Pre-2018 units share the Nortek aluminum-microchannel coil design that has shown above-average leak rates in coastal environments.
- •The Airtemp brand has changed hands and warranty terms multiple times; very old units (pre-2012) may not have transferable coverage.
