About Comfortmaker HVAC Systems
Owned by Carrier Global (ICP)
Comfortmaker is an ICP HVAC brand primarily distributed through independent dealers in the eastern United States. ICP is a Carrier Global division that runs multiple brands: Heil, Tempstar, Arcoaire, Day & Night, Keeprite, and Airquest, all built in the same facilities.
The Comfortmaker name is much older than ICP. It started as an AFCO product line, ran under Singer Climate Control from 1968 to 1982, then SnyderGeneral from 1982 until ICP bought the brand in 1991. Units from those earlier eras use letter-coded serial formats: one style places a year letter and a month letter after the plant digits (00D-C11297 is March 1974), and the hyphenated style places a year letter plus a two-digit week in the middle group (0000211401-P36-0098 is week 36 of 1987). The decoder handles both, along with the standard ICP format used since 1991: year in positions 2-3, manufacturing week in positions 4-5. Some older units also printed the manufacture date directly on the data plate, so check the label for a printed MFG date as well.

Known Comfortmaker Issues to Watch For
A short list of patterns reported on Comfortmaker equipment. Most have been addressed with revised designs or service bulletins, but they're useful context if you're diagnosing an older system.
- •Older Comfortmaker units (pre-2008) sometimes printed the MFG date on the label instead of encoding it in the serial; if the decoder returns nothing, check the data plate for a printed date.
- •Aluminum micro-channel coils on 2013+ units leak more often than copper tube-and-fin designs in coastal environments.
- •ICP Observer communicating thermostat is sensitive to wiring; wired Cat-5 connections work better than 18/8 thermostat wire on multi-stage units.
